At Midstate Marriage and Family Therapy, we believe in the power of connection, compassion, and community. Our practice is rooted in the belief that healing happens through relationships—whether that’s with others, with yourself, or within your wider social and cultural context.
We are a team of dedicated therapists who provide affirming, inclusive care to individuals, couples, and families. Grounded in anti-oppressive, systemic approaches to mental health, our mission is to support the well-being of every person we serve, with particular care for those from marginalized and underserved communities. Based in Manlius, NY, we proudly serve the Greater Syracuse area and surrounding Central New York communities with accessible, community-rooted care.
Here, you'll also learn more about what it means to work with a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)—trained professionals who approach therapy through a relational lens, helping clients navigate life’s challenges with awareness of the larger systems and relationships that shape their experiences.

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are mental health professionals trained to understand people within the context of their relationships, communities, and life systems. Unlike approaches that focus solely on the individual, MFTs view emotional and behavioral challenges through a systemic lens—recognizing that our mental health is deeply connected to our experiences with family, culture, identity, and the environments we navigate.
This relational approach means that whether you’re coming to therapy as an individual, couple, or family, your therapist will work with you to explore how patterns, roles, and relationships influence your well-being. By looking at the bigger picture, MFTs help clients build awareness, shift unhelpful dynamics, and develop tools for lasting emotional and relational health.
MFTs are uniquely qualified to address a wide range of concerns, from anxiety and trauma to communication issues, life transitions, and identity exploration. Their training emphasizes empathy, cultural responsiveness, and collaboration—making this approach supportive for people of all backgrounds, experiences, and family structures.

At Midstate Marriage and Family Therapy, we’re committed to advancing the field of Marriage and Family Therapy by supporting clinicians at every stage of their professional journey. We’re proud to serve as a local training site in Manlius, NY, helping shape the next generation of therapists who go on to support individuals, couples, and families throughout the Syracuse area and Central New York. Our team includes licensed therapists, limited permit therapists, and graduate student therapists—all of whom are trained in evidence-based practices and committed to compassionate, affirming care. Here's what each designation means:
LMFTs are fully licensed mental health professionals who have completed a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, accrued extensive supervised clinical experience, and passed all licensing exams. LMFTs can accept insurance and bring years of specialized training to their work with individuals, couples, and families. During your consultation call, they’ll help determine whether your insurance plan covers therapy.
Therapists with a limited permit have earned their graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and are actively completing supervised clinical hours required for full licensure. They offer high-quality care and receive regular oversight from a licensed supervisor. Limited permit therapists do not bill insurance directly but can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Graduate student therapists are in the final phase of their clinical training and work under the close supervision of a licensed professional. They provide compassionate, research-informed care at a reduced fee, helping to expand access to therapy within the community. Like limited permit therapists, they can provide a superbill for clients to submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement.
